We hear not only their disappointment, but their disorientation. They had all the facts, but lack interpretation. And it is precisely then that the risen Christ comes near to them. Characteristically, he does not overwhelm them with presence. He does not force recognition or announce himself and they don’t even know it’s him speaking to them. He just walks with them.
